Train De-coloring
The next step on my “Pierina” project is de-coloring the train before applying the new colors. I did this on april, but I was ill-advised in using motor oil instead of brake fluid as corrosive for the paint. The results are easy to imagine, with the train soaked up in grease… I then put it in some water and soap, and forgot it there. Fast Forward to yesterday, I start feeling something unfinished… the train is still in the water! Time has come to make a proper de-coloring.
I was advised to use Dot3 break fluid, but I could not find it so I used Dot5. I left the train in the fluid for ~18/20 hours and the paint was almost completely gone (and much of the grease too…). These are the steps:
- Soak the model in the brake liquid for at least 12 hours;
- with a toothbrush gently wash away all the remaining paint;
- rinse throughly;
- wash with a product like VIM quite throughly and rinse accurately.
This are the results:

The bumbers would not decolor…
I did not have the original VIM (not the editor eh!) but this was quite good indeed:
